You’re Never Too Old to Get Fit

By Nick Kelly

You’re Never Too Old to Get Fit

I’m Nick Kelly, founder of Nick Kelly Fitness. I’ve worked in fitness for over 23 years, and one thing I want people to understand is that you’re never too old to get fit.

I’m coming up to 50 myself, and I know how quickly the years go by. It’s easy to get caught up in work, family and everything else life throws at you, and before you know it, looking after yourself has taken a back seat.

I’ve also worked in the care sector, so I’ve seen first hand what can happen when people get older and start struggling with their strength, mobility and independence. It’s made me realise just how important it is to look after yourself while you can.

I’m not saying we can stop ourselves getting older. Of course we can’t. But we can do something about how we look after ourselves along the way.

It’s Never Too Late to Start

One thing I hear quite often is that people feel they’ve left it too late to get fit. They might not have exercised for years, they’ve put on weight, or they don’t feel as strong as they used to.

Some people worry that they’re too old to start. Others don’t know where to begin.

My view is that it doesn’t matter whether you’re 40, 50, 60 or older. You can still start making changes. You don’t have to be particularly fit before you begin, and you certainly don’t need to be able to do everything straight away.

It’s about starting where you are now and building from there.

That might mean getting out for more walks, working on your strength, improving your balance or simply getting into a better routine. The important thing is doing something rather than putting it off for another year.

Why Staying Active Matters

For me, fitness isn’t just about how you look. It’s about how you feel and what you can do in everyday life.

Being able to walk comfortably, get up and down stairs, carry your shopping and keep doing the things you enjoy matters. So does having the confidence to get out and about without constantly worrying about your fitness or mobility.

Strength training can help you maintain and build strength as you get older. Regular movement can help with mobility and everyday function. And having a routine can give you something positive to focus on.

You don’t need to spend hours exercising or push yourself to exhaustion. You need a routine that works for you and that you can keep up with.

That’s a big part of my approach to fitness. It’s not about making life harder or putting yourself under pressure. It’s about finding ways to improve your fitness, mindset and wellbeing that fit into your life.

You Don’t Have to Go to a Gym

I know the thought of going to a gym isn’t for everyone.

You might not feel comfortable exercising around other people. You might not know what to do, or perhaps getting there is a barrier in itself.

That’s one of the reasons I provide personal training in your own home. I bring the equipment to you, so you don’t need to travel to a gym or worry about what other people think.

We work around your ability, your goals and what you want to achieve. If you’re just getting started, that’s absolutely fine. If you’ve exercised in the past and want to get back into it, we can work on that too.

There’s no point giving someone a routine they can’t manage or don’t enjoy. I’d rather build things up at a pace that suits them and help them develop a routine they can stick with.

Fitness, Mindset and Wellbeing

At Nick Kelly Fitness, my approach is built around fitness, mindset and wellbeing.

They’re all connected. Improving your fitness can help you feel more capable. Building a routine can give you a sense of direction. And feeling stronger and more confident can make a difference to how you approach everyday life.

I’m not promising that exercise will solve every problem, and I don’t believe you need to completely change your life overnight.

Sometimes it’s about making a few changes, being a bit more consistent and giving yourself the time to see the benefits.

The biggest mistake is thinking you have to wait until you feel fitter, have more time or feel more motivated before you start. Often, getting started is what helps you build that motivation.

Personal Training at Home in Dorset and East Devon

I provide private personal training for people who want to improve their fitness, build strength, lose weight or simply feel better in themselves.

I work with people of different ages and abilities, including those who are returning to exercise after a long break and those who want to stay active as they get older.

I bring the equipment to your home and tailor the sessions to you. There’s no one size fits all approach, because everyone’s starting point and goals are different.

I work across Bridport, Lyme Regis, Dorchester, Weymouth and selected areas of East Devon.

If you’ve been thinking about getting fitter but haven’t known where to start, you don’t need to have everything figured out before getting in touch. We can talk about where you are now, what you’d like to achieve and how I might be able to help.

I’m a firm believer that it’s never too late to start looking after yourself. You can’t turn the clock back, but you can take steps to look after your health, strength and fitness for the years ahead.
